Whatever You Can Do is Truly Good Enough

By Lavi Kilaru

Recently, I found myself in the midst of navigating some emotionally complicated situations with family. In anticipation of the next charged escalation, I kept trying to find the “best” approach to yield the “right” outcome.

But try as I might, I just couldn’t come up with the exact right things to say or do at all times. After all, these were dynamic interactions many times grappling with some of life’s most difficult topics. So of course there was no roadmap or script.

So I did something I don’t have much practice in doing but have been experimenting with lately. I gave up.

Where do you set your focus 👀 in challenging situations?

Share your approach with an anonymous vote! Are you the first to apologize...or the first to walk out the door? Whatever your go-to mode is for handling challenging situations, it boils down to one of these options:

Let me be specific: I gave up trying to find the ‘perfect’ approach. Instead, I focused my energy on just, well - being. And on finding clarity in myself on what it is I wanted to share, rather than focusing on what I wanted to happen.

I said out loud to myself - almost every day - that I didn’t know whether what I was saying or doing was right or wrong, but I sure was trying my best. I know it probably sounds like a cheesy mantra, but it actually worked this time. And I can honestly say that being more present actually led to less post-gaming afterwards. And it paved the way for better and more authentic connection.

So, this month, my Moment of Clarity is to work on believing that whatever it is you are able to do and however it is you are able to show up is good enough. And in the process, you might discover that letting go of demanding more of yourself might actually give you what I think we are all looking for:

The freedom to just be.
