Volume #2: The Burnout Cure

“If you want to live a wholehearted life, you have to become intentional about cultivating sleep and play, and about letting go of exhaustion as a status symbol and productivity as self-worth.”

Brené Brown

This July, we are focusing mindful attention on burnout; what it is, how we talk about it, and what we can do (collectively) to make a full recovery. And no, we’re not just talking quick-fixes like bubble-baths and yoga (although who couldn’t use a hot soak and some downward dog to shake off the day? Count me in). The cycle of stress, exhaustion, and apathy known as burnout is not only a reflection of our personal self-care practices; it’s the result of a social value system that elevates exhaustion to a status symbol and overlooks the importance of deep rest. Meet the evil cousin of burnout, that all-too-familiar cycle of stress, exhaustion, and a losing battle with the snooze button. Sound familiar? Here’s what you can do to restore balance when you’ve burned out before.

Burnout is never only about the person experiencing exhaustion. The shift from fire-fighting through the day to full recovery isn’t just about scheduling in a regular bubble bath; it’s about social accountability.

⭐ Reflection Prompt ⭐

Every one of us has a different set of stress triggers. Are you more prone to the compassion burnout familiar to caregivers who pour energy into others, or perhaps the obsessive burnout of an independent worker-bee who burdens themselves with perfection? Or maybe you prioritize activities that nourish and stress-proof your psyche on a regular basis? Take some time this week and month to reflect on how your values (conscious or unconscious) set you up to respond to stress cycles.

What personal values do you hold that prevent, trigger, or maintain stress cycles that could lead to burnout?
