Why Your Health Should Always be Your #1 Priority
By Lavi Kilaru
Your health is the most important asset you have. Let me repeat: Your health should always, always be your #1 priority. Why? When taken away, almost nothing else matters as much. And if you asked most people, they would likely agree.
After all, it seems obvious right?
And yet…even with the knowledge that “if you don’t have your health, you don’t have anything,” how many of us treat our health as precious as it really is?
If you’re completely honest, how often do you actually:
💊 Listen to your body’s STOP signals when you’re working
đź’Š Get your recommended 30 minutes of exercise in every day
đź’Š Schedule your week according to your mental health needs
Instead, health is the thing we try to find time to do after we do everything else - work, taking care of family or friends, and even social commitments. Somehow, as a society, we have normalized that taking care of our bodies and minds is a luxury; something to do when we have the time and money to indulge, instead of the main event.

Many of us - myself included - only listen when our bodies start screaming out for help. Only then, when you physically can’t continue, does it become painfully obvious that nothing else matters if you don’t have your health.
I have been on the roller coaster with multiple health crises in my own family, so I know firsthand how this goes. Frazzled and feeling “behind” in the midst of the necessary work of caring for myself and my family, I’ve found myself asking the question…
How can I boost productivity when managing chronic symptoms that flare up on any given day?
…And eventually realizing the truth: It’s a trick question.
Because, in fact, caring for yourself and your health is essential work, as we briefly acknowledged during the pandemic. As a society, however, we have largely decided to take care work for granted.
This betrayal means that when people are already feeling their worst, they are also made to feel lazy; on top of whatever health condition, they are, gasp! labeled as unproductive.
My moment of clarity this month is that despite the stigma, the time that you spend on your health and wellbeing is THE single most important thing you are doing for yourself.
